Maarten, originating from the Netherlands, is an avid student with a strong dedication to both computer science and biology. He’s also a passionate athlete, excelling in basketball and weighlifting. His unwavering determination drives him towards his goal of combining coding and biology to create innovative solutions for a better world.Â
Maarten's primary involvement in sports leaned towards individual pursuits rather than team-based activities. Before moving to the Netherlands, he liked tennis and golf, and he briefly tried basketball and football due to school requirements. But when he moved to the Netherlands, he unexpectedly started playing hockey, a sport he knew nothing about. At first, he had a hard time understanding the game, getting along with his new teammates, and kept trying to do everything by himself, which resulted in the other team scoring goals. However, during one game, something important clicked in Maarten’s mind. He realized that working together as a team was the key to winning. This moment taught him the importance of teamwork, talking effectively with others, making new friends, and being flexible.Â
Maarten excels at an IB school, consistently ranking in the top 5% of his class. He juggles around 11 subjects and regularly earns high honor awards. Outside of school, he enjoys playing basketball and weightlifting. Maarten's hunger for knowledge extends to online courses. He's taken classes with Inspirit AI, taught by experts from Stanford and MIT, and delved into biotech with Johns Hopkins University. He's also explored courses at UCLA and Caltech through iDTech. In his free time, he likes reading books like "Atomic Habits" and "Hyperfocus."Â
Maaten’s goal is to attend an American university and study computer science, with a mission to use his innovations to make a positive impact on the world.Â
