Despite progress in recent years, hunger remains a pervasive global issue. As of my last update in 2021, as many as 828 million people were affected by hunger. The number is 46 million people more than a year earlier and 150 million more in 2019. This is a significant portion of the global population facing the daily challenge of not having enough food to lead healthy and active lives. The persistent global hunger is a compelling issue. Hunger can have severe consequences for the physical and cognitive development of children and young adults. In many regions, youth are particularly vulnerable to food insecurity. An estimated 255 million young people reside in countries with the largest concentrations of poverty. Also, there is a high possibility that there will be a cycle of poverty due to the lack of education, and not having a job.
Poverty is an issue worldwide as it is stated as a first SDG. The following are the key SDGs that CafeKids would like to tackle. SDG 1 No Poverty relates to CafeKids by providing meals and supporting us. The project addresses both hunger and poverty, contributing to reducing inequality. SDG 2 Zero Hunger connects since the project aims to combat hunger and promote access to nutritious food. Furthermore, SDG 17 Partnerships for the Goals links due to the collaboration with various stakeholders demonstrate the importance of collective action in achieving sustainable development goals. Overall, poverty directly impacts access to food, influenced by complex societal factors such as economic, social, resource scarcity, conflict injustice, infrastructure, climate, and education.

There are four steps of solution that I would like to address. The first solution is to volunteer for meal provision. This includes collaborating with local businesses and organizations to source surplus food and reduce food waste. Also, exploring partnerships with nutrition experts to ensure meals are nutritious and meet dietary needs is needed. CafeKids will consider extending volunteering beyond cafeterias to other areas where hunger is prevalent, such as food distribution centers or community kitchens. A second way is to raise awareness about poverty and the project by creating multimedia campaigns such as videos, social media, and podcasts to reach a wider audience. Then collaborate with influencers or celebrities to amplify our message. Organizing awareness events or workshops in schools, universities, and community centers will be a part of raising awareness. Developing educational materials or presentations on global hunger and the impact of youth volunteering is also included. Third, outreach and informing is another method. Establishing partnerships with local media outlets for more extensive coverage, developing a user-friendly website and app for easy access to information about volunteering opportunities, creating informational brochures and flyers for distribution in public places, and engaging with schools and universities to include information about volunteering in their curricula, are the elements of this. As a fourth solution, expansion and meeting demand can be raised. Form alliances with national and international organizations focused on hunger eradication, exploring fundraising initiatives to support program expansion and sustainability, considering training and mentoring programs to develop youth leadership in other regions, and developing an online platform to streamline volunteer registration and management are the components of this.

The “LINK” framework is the key structure of CafeKids’ direction. “L” stands for “launch” which means igniting awareness campaigns. This adds a dynamic element, emphasizing active engagement in raising awareness. “I” is for “Introduce” the program. This clarifies the action for introducing the program to the target audience. “N” represents “Navigate” through challenges. CafeKids will emphasize the proactive approach to overcoming difficulties. “K” signifies “Key” which indicates the implementation of key solutions stated previously.
Additionally, the roadmap of CafeKids for three years is as follows. In year one, the organization will focus on awareness and program development. This is about informing through campaigns and community engagement and developing the youth volunteering program, including training materials and resources. Year two will shed light on the program launch and initial implementation. This can be accomplished by piloting the program with a small group of volunteers, gathering feedback, and making adjustments. Moreover, rolling out the program to a wider audience, addressing challenges as they arise. The third year is for scaling and sustainability. Identifying and implementing key solutions to enhance impact, expanding the program’s reach, establishing partnerships, securing sustainable funding, and ensuring long-term success are the components of this.

Besides, there are many impacts that these activities could have. Measuring the project’s success by quantifying the reduction in hunger and food insecurity among the target population, assessing the reach and effectiveness of awareness campaigns, and indicating the number of people informed about hunger issues and the importance of volunteering will contribute to the increase in awareness and advocacy. Youth engagement and leadership are required to evaluate the level of youth involvement in volunteering activities and the development of their leadership skills. Community empowerment and cohesion states for measuring the project’s impact on local communities, including improved access to meals, empowerment of marginalized groups, and enhanced community cohesion. Lastly, partnerships and sustainability are to assess the number and quality of partnerships established to expand the project’s reach and its ability to secure sustainable funding and resources for continued impact. These would lead CafeKids to their success in tackling the issue of poverty by helping 1,000 people and saving 5,230,000 tons of food.
To conclude, CafeKids addresses hunger and poverty by volunteering for meals, raising awareness through campaigns, and expanding. The "LINK" framework provides a structured approach, with a three-year roadmap focusing on awareness, program development, and sustainability. The goal is to reduce hunger, increase awareness, and empower youth through community empowerment and strategic partnerships, positioning CafeKids as a catalyst for positive change.
