Youth Against Chains: Transforming the Fight Against Modern Slavery in Our Communities

I am a grade 10 student at Branksome Hall in Toronto, Canada. I am passionate about human rights and social justice and I believe that equality will contribute to a better world. I am passionate about eradicating modern slavery and my ambition is to use this project to address the seriousness of modern slavery and advocate for human rights.

Modern Slavery is when a person is exploited for the personal or financial gains of another. Although it is illegal in almost every country, it continues to exist in the shadows, where it is a problem almost unknown to the world and it is a crime that is difficult to report.

Even governments don’t report all modern slavery cases, either because they don’t know about the extra cases or because they don’t want to make known that modern slavery could be such a big thing in a country like the UK.

Intro & Mission of your Organisation

The essence of our initiative against Modern Slavery is to halt the exploitation and support survivors. By spreading awareness and fundraising, we can significantly impact lives.

Our strategy employs the RESCUE framework for a holistic approach against modern slavery. Through Revealing the truth, Educating communities, Supporting survivors, Collaborating with organizations, Upholding human rights, and tirelessly working to Eliminate human trafficking, we aim to make substantial progress toward eradicating exploitation. This framework not only directs our efforts but also invites others to contribute to this vital cause. United, we have the power to break down the structures enabling modern slavery, reinstating dignity and freedom for those unjustly deprived.

This insight is pivotal to our mission and underscores the imperative for immediate action against modern slavery.

Our goals include:

Raising Awareness: Ensuring high school students are informed about modern slavery.

Bigger Impact in College: Leveraging the Internet and partnerships to amplify concern and action against modern slavery at the collegiate level.

Making Companies Do Better: Advocating for ethical business practices to eliminate slavery from supply chains.

Gaining Recognition: Achieving acknowledgement in our community and beyond for our anti-slavery efforts.

Sustaining the Movement: Securing funding to continue and expand our impact over time.

In closing, this blog isn't just a call to action; it's an invitation to be part of a movement that believes in the power of change. From the classrooms of Branksome Hall to the global stage, our journey against modern slavery is just beginning. Join us, and together, let's forge a path to a world where freedom isn't a privilege but a right afforded to all.

"Overcoming poverty is not a task of charity, it is an act of justice. Like slavery and apartheid, poverty is not natural. It is man-made and it can be overcome and eradicated by the actions of human beings." Nelson Mandela
