Vince Wu is a student from California who is driven by his passion for addressing pressing environmental issues. Growing up, Vince’s time spent hiking, camping, and embracing the outdoors with BSA Scouts ignited a profound love and appreciation for the beauty of nature. However, during those formative years, he couldn’t help but notice the relentless wildfire seasons that blanketed the air with toxic grey smog coupled with the distressing reports of record-breaking natural disasters unfolding globally. Witnessing the devastating consequences of climate change and environmental degradation, Vince was compelled to delve deeper and channel his abilities toward making a positive impact on the environment.
Vince strives to engage with the environmental space through both on-the-ground engagement and technical research. He actively engages in projects that focus on agriculture, data science, and the environment, demonstrating a strong commitment to exploring innovative solutions to global issues. Vince’s research at the intersection of computer and environmental science has yielded significant accomplishments, including scientific publication and a Grand Award at the International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF).
The “Climate Community Center” Project
Vince’s environmental activism efforts are what inspired him to form the Climate Community Center. Since becoming involved in the environmental space in high school, he'd seen the incredible passion of the people but also often witnessed times when people didn't know an event was happening. He’d also heard and seen how finding and connecting with a suitable environmental organization served as a barrier to entry for many young environmentalists. When he heard Senator Dave Cortese say at the SVYCA Youth Climate Summit to a group of leaders in environmental nonprofits “You guys are good, but you don’t come together”, his desire to create more effective connections in his local Bay Area environmental community was solidified.
Collaboration is crucial to address the many issues facing our environment and maximize the effort put in by countless passionate environmental volunteers. Pooling resources and manpower enables collective groups to reach heights that individuals cannot, helping push us towards a greener future. Additionally, it is often difficult for new or young environmentalists to find a foothold within the space to begin getting involved, which limits the potential for the growth of the environmental sector.
With Climate Community Center, Vince seeks to more effectively link his local Bay Area environmental space with three broad initiatives: a fellowship program to connect youth environmentalists with valuable internship and volunteer positions in environmental groups; a community newsletter to provide an easy way to stay on top of the events and initiatives happening across the space; and content, such as podcasts and blog posts, to educate community members and engage with a variety of environmental topics.
Since environmental work impacts almost all areas of sustainable development, the Climate Community Center’s mission involves most of the United Nations Global Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The following are some of the SDGs that Climate Community Center focuses on most:
SDG 7 - Affordable and Clean Energy:
Transitioning to clean energy is crucial to mitigating carbon emissions and overall pollution Given that traditional energy reproduction through fossil fuel burning emits massive amounts of greenhouse gases
SDG 11 - Sustainable Cities and Communities:
Addressing the need for the local community
SDG 12- Responsible Consumption and Production - Promoting Circular Economy and waste-free living with/ responsible consumption and production practices
SDG 13- Climate Action:
- Environmental awareness + Sustainable initiatives. Podcast linking to SDG 11
SDG 17 - Partnerships for the Goals: Encourage Collabs between environmental organisations, businesses towards solutions. Sustainability in Corporate Culture
The environmental crisis is more urgent today than ever before. The most pressing environmental issue facing us is global warming. Spurred by rapidly increasing anthropogenic greenhouse gas emissions, Earth’s temperature has risen by roughly 0.14° Fahrenheit on average each decade since 1880.
(https://www.climate.gov/news-features/understanding-climate/climate-change-global-temperature#:~:text=Highlights,2%C2%B0%20F%20in%20total). These staggering impacts have spurred a global wave of extreme heat events, droughts, and generally increased Global warming not only impacts temperature but also has massive impacts on many other issues like sea level rise and acidification as well as extreme weather.
This has resulted in a global sea level rise of about 8–9 inches since 1880 (https://www.climate.gov/news-features/understanding-climate/climate-change-global-sea-level). To make matters worse, each year, the rate of global sea level rise continues to increase. By 2100, sea levels are expected to be at least 1 foot above the 2000 levels.

We aim to have our first round of fellowship students connected with environmental positions by May 2024. We plan to continue expanding our reach and impact within the community, bringing more environmentalists together throughout the Bay Area. Our ultimate vision is to build a platform that offers a variety of environmental programs and serves as a hub for environmentalists throughout the Bay to connect.
