Breaking Barriers: Empowering Women in Business and STEM for a More Inclusive Future"

I have always harbored a deep interest in business. However, it became evident to me that persistent stereotypes in business-related fields, particularly targeting women and women of color, lead to their frequent oversight. Furthermore, I recognized the unfortunate reality that some women and girls globally lack access to sufficient learning resources and a supportive community to thrive.

Addressing the issue of inadequate female representation in fields like business and STEM is crucial for various reasons. Firstly, it unlocks significant untapped potential and fosters economic growth. Gender equality is intricately linked to prosperity, and when women have equal opportunities in the workforce, it enhances productivity, raises GDP, and fortifies economies. This is especially critical now as the cost of living rises and the recent global pandemic impacts the economy, pushing a majority of employed women (58%) into the informal sector with inadequate worker protections.

Additionally, it tackles the skills gap, and a shortage of skilled workers in specific fields. Presently, about 64% of bachelor's degrees in education, humanities, and social sciences are awarded to women, compared to 31% in other subjects. Encouraging women to pursue careers in these fields helps bridge the gap, ensuring industries access diverse talent to thrive. The impact extends beyond the immediate issue, crucial for achieving related goals such as quality education, reduced inequalities, and ending poverty (other SDGs).

My realization during an economics class, where only four out of over 20 students were girls and faced seating disparities, underscores the insufficient female representation in business and finance, discouraging women from pursuing careers in these fields. Factors like the gender gap, glass ceiling, and a lack of role models compound this disparity.

Motivated by this personal experience, I initiated a project to empower women in business-related fields through resource provision, education, and inspiration. The project aims to build a supportive community by sharing experiences and stories through online articles and educating those lacking resources through accessible online presentations and articles on various business concepts. Through this, I aspire to foster a sense of community and solidarity among women pursuing these subjects, providing an enhanced opportunity to pursue their passions.

Equibiz’s framework highlights the project's key missions. As time progresses, the project will expand its online community for women to share resources, connect, and seek networking opportunities.

A brief roadmap for the next two years includes:

Year 1: Foundation Building

  • Forming a core team and collaborating with local partners.

  • Launching campaigns to raise awareness about gender diversity.

  • Organizing workshops introducing girls to business and finance.

  • Initiating mentorship programs connecting students with professionals.

Year 2: Impact Expansion

  • Strengthening business partnerships for internships.

  • Featuring successful women in events to inspire others.

  • Expanding the online community for networking and resources.

  • Advocating for policy changes promoting gender equality.

Ultimately, this project aims to address several UN Sustainable Development Goals, specifically focusing on quality education, gender equality, and reduced inequalities. While these issues are deeply rooted and challenging on a global scale, providing learning resources and support for female students in male-dominated fields aims to create an impact, even within the local community.
